PLUS: We get into politics (as usual)

Well, we made it through another Pride. It seems like it takes forever for the last week in June to get here, and then it just zips by so fast! And this year with the passing of icons Michael Jackson and sweet angel Farrah Fawcett, we were determined to make the rainbow shine a bit brighter if only for them. We’ll try to recollect all the mayhem and merriment, but we’re not making any promises.

We’re still basking in the afterglow of last Monday’s HX Awards: Decision 2009. Where else could we hang with Mindy Cohn, sit next to Ben Andrews and walk into a bathroom stall just as Junior Vasquez was walking out? The fun continued at the unofficial after-party at View Bar, where the beefy boys of Woof! were barking up each other’s trees. We chatted up porn pup Ricky Sinz, got our fortunes read and scarfed down some free fried chicken.

He couldn’t make it to the Awards, but Dustin Lance Black wasn’t far away. Our spies caught him at Barracuda quietly sipping drinks by the DJ booth with Cleve Jones. Oh get a room, boys!

Earlier that night we wolfed down a few appies at the Center’s Garden Party on Pier 54, where occasional raindrops didn’t stop hundreds from enjoying fare from some of the most exclusive and delicious restaurants in NYC, including Butter Lane, Esca, Pearl Oyster Bar, Gotham Bar and Grill, gay haunts Ate Ave and VYNL, Klee Brasserie and, unbelievably, Chipotle. (Have they been following us on our lunch hour?) Even those who weren’t noshing enjoyed the passion fruit-infused Carmen Miranda cocktails. Seen: Congressman Jerrold Nadler, Comptroller Bill Thompson, Leslie Crocker Snyder, Cy Vance, GMHC’s Marjorie Hill and Janet Weinberg, and Anti-Violence Project director Sharon Stapel.

Lance and Cleve might’ve been taking a break from politics, but Steel Gym owner Ken Hunt and hubby John Cassese weren’t. At a special event at Gracie Mansion Tuesday, the power couple thanked Mayor Bloomberg for his support of the LGBT community and gay marriage. Hizzoner, who’s been courting the gays big-time, thanked them in turn for the gym’s commitment to the gay community. Ken and John caught Christine Quinn on her way out, too—don’t be surprised if she has a fund-raiser at chateau Hunt sometime soon.

Don’t hate but we managed to score tickets to Mika’s show at Le Poisson Rouge on Tuesday. Despite being under the weather, the androgynous popster still put on an cheery acoustic show, opening his hour-and-a-half set with crowd favorite “Grace Kelly,” before launching into “Billy Brown,” and new songs “Blue Eyes” and “Lonely Alcoholic,” dedicated to Village Voice gadfly Michael Musto. How gay was the night? How about gallons of silver confetti descending on the crowd during “Big Girl (You Are Beautiful)”?

Wednesday marked the triumphant return of drag fave Carmella Cann, who’s been on hiatus working on a short film. Carm whipped up special variety show at Posh, where she managed to get two sexy twinks to lick whipped cream off of each other. We should really produce our own “variety” show. Spicky Hilton popped in and belted out Beyoncé’s “If I Were a Boy.” Honey, if you were a boy, you’d still be a girl! Wednesday was also Fusion ‘09 at the Stonewall Inn, a benefit for the Anti-Violence Project. DJ Randy Bettis spun alongside Brian Kent, and our new best friend Robbyne Kaamil, who killed at the HX Awards, cracked us up. Somebody get this lady some fried chicken! A dashing Will Clark stepped up to the plate and offered to hold a benefit bingo party at Pieces, raising the agency an additional $1,000 in donations for the night. What a group of generous gays!

Robert Valin resurrected his famous Daddy party for Pride week, moving the no-cover leather lovefest to The Park. “We’ve never had it in the Red Room before,” Valin told us. “It was like being in an old mansion with all these taxidermied animals.“ Is Valin going to make this a regular event? Our Magic 8-Ball says, “Outlook good.” Seen: DJ Chauncey, Robert Escalera, JJ Mack and Johnny Mack, who hung up his go-go boots for the night.

It was a dignified affair on Thursday, when the New York State Senate honored Barracuda and Elmo owner Bob Pontarelli with a special Human Rights Award for his exemplary leadership and commitment to the LGBT community. Also receiving honors were stage legend Angela Lansbury, actor Patrick Wilson, Lance Bass, Cleve Jones and Dustin Lance Black. Dustin, we love you, but stop being such a recluse!

Friday night we took in a special Pride edition of Celebrity Autobiography—you know, that show where the stars of today read from memoirs of has-beens, never-weres and shouldn’t-have-beens? Jackie Hoffman, Rachel Dratch, Cheyenne Jackson, Michael Urie, Kristen Johnston, Dayle Reyfel and Eugene Pack performed—and we almost lost it when Urie read from Miley Cyrus’ autobiography, Miles to Go. “I was born Destiny Hope Cyrus but I became Smiley Miley and then as I got older, Miley,” he recited. “Who am I? Am I Destiny? Am I Miley? I am all those things and those things are me.” She contains multitudes, people. Then it was over to the Highline Ballroom for Blowoff. The place was packed with a crowd so woofy, our bearish buddy said he felt like a grizzly in a salmon shop. Oddly enough, a pack of lady models were spotted as well. Turns out they were just big fans of DJ/host Richard Morel, who rocked the room all night alongside indie-rock pioneer Bob Mould. Seen: joemygod.com blogger Joe Jervis, photographer Blake Little, Snaxx’s Gustavo Motta and Rich King, BUTT magazine’s Danny Calvi, MetroBears’ Chris Aniello, They Shoot Homos Don’t They magazine’s Shannon Michael Cane and DJ DeMarko. The boys were proud at the Seven Deadly Sins party at Irving Plaza, honoring the sin of pride. Hosted by nakedboynews.com’s twink J.Son, the decadent getdown saw She-Dick perform three songs and The Kiki Twins premiere their new music video, “Geometry in Motion.”

Unlike the bears of Blowoff, we starved ourselves so we could really chow down at the Gay Soirée Saturday at the James Beard House, where gourmet eateries like Blue Fin, Commerce and Devi were dishing up delicious hors d’ouevres and cutie pie mixologists Tad Carducci and Paul Tanguay of the Tippling Bros. were pouring exquisitely exotic cocktails. We made nice with Water Taxi Beach honcho Harry Hawk, who reminded us he’s opening another of his wonderful sandy oases on Governors Island. On the way out, we nearly bumped into actress and activist Heather Mazzarato, who swooped inside carrying a pair of drumsticks (wooden, that is, not chicken.)

L.A. transplant Scott Nevins returned to NYC for the one-off comedy special, One Night Stand, at New World Stages. Nevins kibitzed about his misadventures with high-profile Hollywood celebs, attending the Oscars, judging the Miss Kentucky Pageant, and his racy relationship mishaps. Slap a red wig on him and he could be Kathy Griffin! We might see more of Scotty if “Stand” makes the transition to off-Broadway. Will they have to rename it then?

Later that night, Peter Rauhofer’s We Can party packed Roseland with the bold and the beautiful from New York’s gay glitterati and beyond. Draped in flags from around the world, the dance floor was a multicultural beefcake melting pot—boiling over with the most delicious man-meat this city has to offer. Nestled in the nether regions of the cool VIP balcony, we delighted at the waves of shirtless studs below as DJs Paolo, Oscar G, Offer Nissim and Peter himself filled us with love and pride. Leaving at the peak of the evening, around 6am, we just caught special guest Mya, but heard from our twisted neighbor who arrived home at 11am that Kevin Aviance’s worked it out later as well. Seen: Ross Palombo, Jamison DeTrolio, Rich Lee and Steve Somers, Iestyn and Kevyn Fairchild, Chris Jorgenson, Peter Hemmel and Andy Stewart.

Leighton Meester is desperate to be a hyphenate. The Gossip Girl actress is trying to build a singing career and warbled two tracks off her upcoming album at The F* Word Saturday night. Can she sing? Let’s just say she’s better than Heidi Montag but worse than Mandy Moore.

We can barely begin to describe the magic and mayhem that was the Love Ball at the Nokia Theatre in Times Square. After a full concert from OUTMusic artists like Ari Gold and Billy Porter, we were treated to Sophia Lamar as Judy Garland, massive DJ sets from Chris Cox and Alyson Calagna, and Harlem voguers giving us ballroom realness. The Saint at Large folks said they were gonna bring the “love” and they did. Seen: Acid Betty, Lance Bass, Heather Leigh West, Vito Fun, Xtah-C, Anorexia, GeGe Ninja and Mimi Karma.

Sunday morning we got up at the cock’s crow to make the most of Pride. After a hasty brunch, we marched over to Fifth Avenue and 16th Street, where Trump Model Management honcho Duane Gazi and his cohort Rashgene hosted a parade-viewing party. It was a subtle affair, what with the dynamic duo in football drag and cupcakes with penis-shaped frosting lined up on the snack table. Dangling out the eighth-story window, we waved as everyone from the kids of the Hetrick-Martin Institute to the silver-haired foxes of SAGE sashayed by. Seen: Leo Pedraza, Ted Huang, Rod Townsend, Jon Mallow, Ruso Panduro, Anthony Giordano, Phillip Ramirez and HX’s Dan Avery.

As the sun dipped lower in the sky, the queens were in a tizzy at the Pier Dance. We arrived early to catch DJs Philip Kimball and Jack Reina spinning and sample some of the free cocktails in the VIP lounge. Our fun was sightly tainted when our out-of-town guest got his wallet stolen out of his hand just as he was about to tip the bartenders. Not a very proud moment, but security was extremely helpful and although the wallet was never recovered, we soldiered on. DJ Corey Craig provided just the remedy to get us back banging on the dance floor. Seen: Joe Hom, Rafael D’Arce, Rich Lee and Steve Somers, Andy Stewart, Andrew Spina, Tim McGlyn, Ed McElhiney, Iestyn and Kevyn Fairchild, Chad Stringfellow, Peter Hemmel and Matthew Bank, Ben Tipton and Chris Jorgenson. And we know you’re all wondering who the surprise guest was. Lady Gaga? Beyoncé? Kylie? Nope, it was Sabrina Johnston. Who? Exactly. Still, the fireworks were nice.

Drowning in testosterone, we took a breather at Sapphic hotspot Rubyfruit Lounge, which reopened after a brief “vacation.” A lot of boys must’ve had the same idea because the place was crawling with dudes. At least we thought they were dudes.

We raced down the rabbit hole and popped up at M2, for the Alegria Pride “Alice in Wonderland” party. We must’ve had a slice of the wrong cake, because we could’ve sworn the giant caterpillar in the middle of the dance floor was talking to us. Even so, we managed to tweedledance to DJs Tony Moran, Abel and the gorgeous Micky Friedmann, who spun in the front room all night long.

We had our head on straight by the time we got to Splash, where Deborah Cox was following DJs Ian Ford and Max Rodriguez with a live set featuring her hits “Nobody’s Supposed to Be Here,” “Absolutely Not” and “Beautiful You Are.” Debs was scheduled to appear at midnight but didn’t take the stage until closer to 1:45am. She must’ve been on Gay People Time.

Out on Fire Island, the queens were still mourning Michael Jackson when Showtune Sunday VJ Tony L screened his MJ tribute, complete with the cast of Hair singing “I’ll be There.” There are plenty of queens, it’s true. But there will be only one king of pop.

Jekyll & Hyde is mostly known as a haven of heteros, but Tuesday nights the West Village bar and grill gets wickedly queer with Good vs. Evil. In addition to scantily-clad shot boys and a tipsy happy-hour crowd with naughty thoughts on their mind, promoter Adam Scott promises Fear Factor-type challenges for contestants willing to stomach anything for free drinks and prizes. “It’s about letting your dark side come out for a little bit—doing things you normally wouldn’t,” says Scott. As for the gross out factor, he promises they’re nothing too dreadful—like having to touch a boob. “They pretty much involve eating or drinking something weird. This past Tuesday they had to eat blood worms.” Helping to give some liquid courage, scandalous shot boys patrol the room offering double shots in oversized syringes. “To some that’s good, but others might see them as evil,” Scott says. “If you can handle a shot from them then you can handle anything.” Well after a few shots, we’ve all been known to swallow a worm or two, right? —Anne Alexander
